Been Back...
...for a few weeks now. I am just enjoying the summer before school starts and days like these will be will be a distant memory. Quick update: Comic-con was awesome and I passed my summer course with an A(!). Thank. The. Lord. It's so nice to get a difficult gen-ed out of the way. I plan on posting some of the highlights of comic-con soon. Unfortunately I didn't take that many photos due to the fact that comic-con can be a bit over-whelming (I almost got squished to death). I'm looking forward to blogging until fall semester starts!

Hiatus
I'm going to take a bit of a hiatus due to the super hectic week that is about to happen. Things have been a bit slow on the blog front for the past few weeks because of my summer course that I am taking. It's in a subject that is super stressful and super difficult for me but it is a general education class so there is no chance of avoiding it. This week is both comic-con (!!!) and finals week ( :/ ). I have to do three finals for this class in a hotel room which REALLY stresses me out. I can't think about fun stuff when I have all of this not fun stuff to think about. I plan on taking a ton of photos though especially because I have my beautiful new camera! So, anyway this has been an update and explanation for why I will be absent for the next week or so.
P.S. Packing and studying isn't the best combo in the world.
Sincerely, Emily

Hallows and Horcruxes
I thought that since tonight is the premiere of the final Harry Potter movie I would to like to say a few *cough*extremely lame/nerdy*cough* things about a series of books that meant so much to me.
The first four HP books came out when I was very young. So young that it was my mother who read them to me before bed (I remember she cried a bit when Cedric died). I loved that time we spent together every night and it was her who planted a love of reading in me. I read the fifth, sixth, and seventh books on my own well, because at that point I was too old to be read to. These books were amazing and to a 12 year old girl reading quietly on her bed they really did feel like magic. These books started out as a silly children's story of spells and broomsticks and evolved into a harrowing tale of good vs evil and of love and how really important it is in a world where even our friends can fall.
I am not going to the midnight premiere tonight (I'm not that much of a fan of midnight premieres). But I am going Sunday with my mom when the crowds have died down a bit. Still REALLY excited. Don't tell anyone, but I actually re-read the last book in preparation for the film.
P.S. Did I tell you that I got to see all of the Horcruxes in person? I took more pictures of the diadem and locket and stuff but all I could find on my computer was this slightly blurry photo of Tom Riddle's diary still cool right?

Today's song is one that has been on repeat all week ....
"Modern Love" by Matt NathansonThis is off of his new album also named Modern Love. To. Die. For.
This man is magical. I have seen him live twice and he is so talented and charming. Every time he would play his song "Princess" he would go off and start playing Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl". Swoon.
I plan on doing a full album review later this week so kept your eyes peeled!

Red Head?
This morning as I was washing my face I couldn't help but notice the amount of red in my hair. This was partially due to the lighting but my hair does naturally have quite a bit of a red undertone to it. I happen to really love red undertones. I don't think that I have mentioned this on here before but I am really perceptive when it comes to color and I am also SUPER sensitive to color. For a long time I wouldn't use black Sharpies because of the amount of blue undertones I see in it. Color is a big part in my art and in my life as well.

Love to the Max.
I don't know why but recently I have really been loving the look of maxi skirts. Not that long ago I would cringe at the thought of a maxi skirt; immediately thinking of the maxi skirts that were flaunted in the 90s but maxi skirts like the one in this video kind of make me swoon. Maybe if I come across a cute maxi for cheap I'll pick it up. Who knows?

Sunday Inspiration.
This week I randomly stumbled upon the work of David Ellis. These sculptures that he does with records are pretty amazing. I love vinyl and have a small collection myself. I also love how when the spines of the albums are placed together they look like a abstract expressionist painting or something. Simply Beautiful.
*Don't forget to check out more of his amazing work HERE*

EEEK! A Geek!

LOVE this chart. The design geek made me giggle, in art school some of my classmates would discuss whether helvetica is really good or just lazy. Those design kids love their fonts.
P.S. Sorry for the spotty blogging this week!

Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful!
The weather outside really is pretty frightful and by frightful I mean HOT. I live in the desert so it is to be expected. Last week the temperature climbed to 112 degrees F. Muy caliente! The heat here is dry which many don't like but I am one of those people who prefer it over humidity.
Here I have assembled an outfit to combat the summer's heat. Enjoy!
1. Breezy blouse
2. A bag as bright as the sun
3. A cute daisy ring!
4. Creme colored sandals
5. Fabulous fuchsia shorts

It Ain't Easy Being Green
Last weekend I went to the movies and saw The Green Lantern. This movie has been hyped like crazy for what feels like a year. It was one of the hot topics of comic-con last summer even though they were still filming. I am not going to get in to the whole plot of the movie so I will just say that it follows a man named Hal as he becomes a superhero with awesome powers that are generated though his ring (p.s. LOVE a man who knows the importance of accessorizing).
So what did I think of this movie? Eh. Not bad, Not great.
Let's start with the cons: The first thing I noticed was that the special effects weren't that great. This isn't something that I usually notice in movies but the quality wasn't what I expected for the high-budget movie that it was. The next thing was the timing/ pace of the movie, it would kind of lag in certain places and I couldn't really ever tell how far into the movie I was. I also didn't like Blake Lively's character. She started the movie as a tough as nails, strong woman and ended the movie as a helpless damesl in distress, but I guess the superhero has to save someone, right?
Now the pros: My biggest pro of this movie was the leading man Ryan Reyonds. No one and I mean no one could have played The Green Lantern better than him. He was funny, charming and doesn't look half bad in skin tight suit ;]
The bottom line: I would suggest you see it for Mr. Ryan Reyonds alone.

To Michael, With Love.
So, confession: The art/craft store Michaels makes my heart sing. I have known for Michaels to make artists cringe but they just have such a nice selection at nice prices. Don't get me wrong I love the small high end art stores but they have to over price many of their products to stay afloat. Michaels offers great sales, weekly coupons, and rewards program.
So, here are a few things that picked up recently:
From right to left:
- Extra strength glue stick (highly recommend if you can't afford YES! Paste)
- Amazing and cute dollar isle pencil pouch (for my everyday bag)
- Sketch book (you can never have to many)
- Two packets of Rit Dye in Fuchsia and Sunshine Orange!
- Cheap tablet of watercolor paper (to experiment on)

Music Monday Summer Lovin' Edition (Part 2)!
This next artist is someone who I just seem to gravitate to during the summer months. Ben Kweller is a favorite artist of mine and his songs are just too catchy to not like. Here is one of his most popular songs and the reason why so many ladies flock to his concerts in pretty floral dresses.
"Sundress" by Ben Kweller
P.S.- That is him and his real life lady in this video.

How To: Cut a Men's T-Shirt
I love men's graphic tees but the problem is that they aren't always that flattering or stylish plus sometimes I find the neckline is a bit on the chokey side.
Make a 1-1 1/2 inch sip on each side of the collar and then connect the two sips in an even and curved cut.
Step two:
Cut 1-2 inches off each sleeve (men's shirts tend to have long sleeves for their manly muscles). Keep in mind that the unfinished ends might curl slightly.
Step three:
Cut 1-2 inches on the bottom, if the shirt is long.
Sincerely, Emily
All you need is:
- A men's t-shirt
- Scissors

One Super Movie
Last weekend I saw the movie Super 8. One of the main reasons that I wanted to see this movie was because of the movie's writer and director, J.J. Abrams. Now, I am a HUGE sucker for anything J.J. Abrams. I have watched all of his T.V. shows that he has ever been a part of. This movie is, to put it lightly, fantastic and even better than I thought it would be. For the most part I'm pretty young having grown up in the 90s and early 00s so you can probably guess that I didn't really know what a "Super 8" was. For others who don't know, a Super 8 was a popular type of video camera in the late 70s/80s.
The movie is set in 1980 and follows a wide eyed group of boys (think Goonies or Stand by me) as they spend their summer making a zombie movie with their Super 8 camera. One night they sneak out to film a scene at a train station accompanied by a girl at their school (Elle Fanning) whom they have recruited to play their leading lady. As they are filming a military train passes by and derails, their Super 8 capturing the moment. What is on the train reeks havoc on the small town and the people who live in it.
Unfortunately, I can't really say more with out giving away the entire movie. This movie had that magical feeling too it. A feeling that is hard to describe but reminds me of when I would go to the movies as a kid. I felt almost engulfed in the magic of it all. To me it's 100% worth seeing in the theater. I also really loved Elle Fanning in it. That girl is going to have quite the career.

Music Monday No.005
Welcome to Music Monday Summer Lovin' Edition (part one)!
So, one of the musicians that I think of when I think summer is G. Love. His music is smart, catchy, and just all around good. This probably won't be the last you will hear of him on here due to the fact that he ranks pretty high on my list of favorite musicians. You can pretty much count on him making the Music Monday rounds in the future.
Take a listen-
"Holla"by G. Love
"Cold Beverage" by G. Love and the Special Sauce
(please ignore the video, it's the only one I could find on youtube with a decent sound quality)

Sunday Inspiration---Marc Johns
I haven't done a Sunday Inspiration in a while. I think that is because you can't put a time frame on when you are supposed to feel inspired. For the last few weeks I haven't been particularly inspired mostly because I have been distracted (to put it lightly) by summer school.
Today's inspiration is Marc Johns. In all honestly I have only recently found his art but I am in love with it. It strangely reminds me of some of the work that I do which is perhaps one of the reasons why I'm drawn to it. Take a look and don't forget to check out his website for more drawing and t-shirts too! (I myself have been eying the fake rainbow one).

A Bit of Bling.
I have been loving the look of a glittery polish only on the ring finger. It is enough glitter to add some fun to your nails without making you feel as if you have been possessed by Ke$ha.

Music Monday #004
Today it's a song that just sounds like summer to me.
"Moneygrabber" by Fitz and the Tantrums.
I'm thinking of devoting the next few Music Mondays to the songs that are summer staples to me. I think that everyone has those songs that when they hear them they automatically think of the summer time.

Beautiful Birkenstocks
Birkenstocks have to be the best everyday shoes on this plant. I got my first pair as a birthday present almost two years ago and love them. I have put MANY miles on them including trips to New York, D.C., San Diego (where I did TONS of walking) and running around my college campus. I have also done an AIDS walk in them and even hiked mountains in them. In all honesty they do hurt a bit when you first get them but soon enough they mold to your feet and are crazy comfortable. My mother actually found these on sale and picked them up for me. I couldn't really object as they are pretty cute, perfect for summer, and my old pair are pretty dodgy (I refuse to get rid of them though). I think that Birkenstocks get kind of a bad rap by the people that think of them as either hippie sandals or the clunky man-sandals that your dad likes to wear with socks, but they actually come in cute styles. If I had a million dollars I would totally be sporting the Florida sandal in stone and the Gizeh sandal in antique lace.
P.S. My new pair is the Madrid in emerald isle and my first pair was the Sydney-- which is like the Arizona but with thinner straps.

Today's inspiration is Mark Jenkins. I love his street installations, they are so abnormal but fit in their environments so well. I recently did a class installation where we made human tape sculptures. It was eerie just like Jenkins sculptures. Be sure to check out more of his amazing work here.
